Interview with ALBERT SOLER, from Scaparium Vilanova
You’re very young, aren’t you?
Yes, I’m 28 years old.
From Vilanova?
Yes, always.
And what did you do before making Room Scape?
I spent 7 years living in Les Borges Blanques, dedicated to table tennis. He was a professional player.
Oh, it’s true! You were Marc Duran’s classmate, weren’t you? I remember writing about you when I worked in the media of the region!
Yes. Until last season he played with Borges.
And you don’t play table tennis anymore?
Not anymore. Sport at a high level is very sacrificed.
Did you make a good living playing only table tennis?
Yes yes. I dedicated myself exclusively to that.
And you said enough…
It had already been 7 years. Lots of training, three sessions a day during the week. And then, at the weekend, travel. There comes a time when you get tired.
Did you live there?
Yes. He had an apartment in Les Borges Blanques.
Well, between living in Vilanova or in Les Borges Blanques…
Clear. Borges has 5,000 inhabitants. It has nothing to do with Vilanova.
And when did you come back here?
In July last year. I finished the season and started to set up the business.
Did you leave everything to set up Room Scape?
Yes. It was a project that I had been trying to do for some time. And I went ahead with it.
And after seven years away from Vilanova, how do you see the city?
Quite changed, especially in terms of leisure demand. I think it has gone up. More than 2,000 people have already passed through the Room Scape …
But in Vilanova there are many businesses that open and close in a short time…
Because there are many temporary businesses. We thought ours would last a year and a half or two, but no, it’s having a lot of success. We have spoken to other Scaparium in Barcelona and they tell us the same thing. It is an activity that is in high demand.
It’s working well for you, but sometimes there are also businesses that look very good and end up collapsing. Why do you think this happens?
In Vilanova there is a lot of vice of a different type of leisure when going out partying or going karting. Ours is an innovative activity in which families, children, and the elderly can participate.
If one day Room Scape fails you, do you have any thoughts on what you would do next?
No, because we still have quite a few projects to develop. The Scaparium is evolving, now many electronic tests, engineering…
Did you study engineering?
No (laughs). I studied telecommunications. It has nothing to do with what I worked on with what I studied.
But you have everything very well worked out.
We set up Scape and two months later, seeing that it worked, we opened another line of business. We have also brought out another activity which is Team Building, a game created by between 20 and 150 people. We go to the companies and set up the game, I attract…. We do this for large companies that cannot travel to our establishment. We do them at your facilities.
